Chicago, IL – – When I think of tea it almost immediately invokes a sense of calmness and tranquility. As if my body instinctively takes an extra deep inhale and extra long exhale. Tea seems like such a simple and peaceful escape, in a world that’s anything but. So when I recently had the opportunity to photograph the new tea service at LondonHouse Chicago I was filled with excitement. I’d never actually participated in a formal tea service, so I was eager to document every detail.
Growing up in the Midwest I can confidently say that “tea service” is not commonplace in everyday American culture. In fact, I’d go as far as saying you’d be hard pressed to find a cup of tea properly prepared to the standards of the Brits. And there is no arguing the fact that the British know their tea. I recently learned they consume 60 billion cups per year, according to the UK Tea and Infusions Association. So, when the word “London” is in the name of the hotel, you bet they’ve done their research and developed an expertly prepared formal tea service.
Everything about this photoshoot was delightful. We shot this tea service set-up in the same place it’s served everyday, the Bridges Lobby Bar. This spacious room is located on the second floor of the hotel and features massive floor-to-ceiling windows that flood the space with bright, natural light (a food photographer’s dream). The presentation was something out of a story book. Various shades of pastel hues highlighted the three tiers of sweet and savory bites. The pops of blue on the china added great detail, and the clever design of the tea pot itself was also a focus of great interest. Even the tiny honey jar was captivating and adorable.
This tea service is available everyday in the Bridges Lobby Bar from 1pm – 4pm and costs $50 per person. That pricing includes all of the delicate bites as well as your choice of tea. And, Chef Jacob Verstegen and his team recently revamped the menu for Spring! Reserving a table is super easy. Just call 312-253-2317 and they’ll get you all set up.
Enough talk… Here is what you can expect when you experience a proper tea service at LondonHouse Chicago.
